چکیده

In this paper we develop a characterisation of minimal non-planarity of level graphs. We show that a level minimal non-planar (LMNP) graph is completely characterised by either a tree, a level non-planar cycle or a level planar cycle with certain path augmentations. We discuss the usefulness of these characterisations in the context of an branch-and-cut Integer Linear Programming implementation of the Maximum Level Planar Subgraph (MLPS) problem and conjecture that the inequalities associated with level minimal non-planar subgraphs are facet-deening for the MLPS polytope.

A Characterization of Radial Graphs

A level graph G = (V,E, λ) is a graph with a mapping λ : V → {1, . . . , k}, k ≥ 1, that partitions the vertex set V as V = V1 ∪ . . . ∪ Vk, Vj = λ−1(j), Vi ∩ Vj = ∅ for i ̸= j, such that λ(v) = λ(u) + 1 for each edge (u, v) ∈ E. Thus a level planar graph can be drawn with the vertices of every Vj , 1 ≤ j ≤ k, placed on a horizontal line, representing the level lj , and without crossings of edge...

On the Characterization of Level Planar Trees by Minimal Patterns

We consider characterizations of level planar trees. Healy et al. [8] characterized the set of trees that are level planar in terms of two minimal level non-planar (MLNP) patterns. Fowler and Kobourov [7] later proved that the set of patterns was incomplete and added two additional patterns. In this paper, we show that the characterization is still incomplete by providing new MLNP patterns not ...

Minimum Level Nonplanar Patterns for Trees

Level graphs model hierarchical relationships. A level drawing has all vertices of the same level with the same y-coordinates and all edges strictly y-monotonic. Level planar graphs have level drawings without edge crossings. Hierarchies are special cases in which every vertex is reachable via a y-monotonic path from a source at the top level. Many natural hierarchies occur in the sciences incl...

On classes of minimal circular-imperfect graphs

Circular-perfect graphs form a natural superclass of perfect graphs: on the one hand due to their definition by means of a more general coloring concept, on the other hand as an important class of χ-bound graphs with the smallest non-trivial χ-binding function χ(G) ≤ ω(G) + 1. The Strong Perfect Graph Conjecture, recently settled by Chudnovsky et al. [4], provides a characterization of perfect ...

Recognizing Planar Strict Quasi-Parity Graphs

A graph is a strict-quasi parity (SQP) graph if every induced subgraph that is not a clique contains a pair of vertices with no odd chordless path between them (an``even pair''). We present an O…n 3 † algorithm for recognizing planar strict quasi-parity graphs, based on Wen-Lian Hsu's decomposition of planar (perfect) graphs and on the (non-algorithmic) characterization of planar minimal non-SQ...
